Paving weather questions
What temperature is too cold to pave?
Air temperature must be at least 50°F (ideally 55°F+) for standard asphalt paving. Below 45°F the mix cools too fast before compaction is complete. Surface temperature matters too — a cold base draws heat out of the mix faster than air temp alone suggests.
Can you pave asphalt in the rain?
No. Rain on a hot asphalt mat causes steam that disrupts compaction and can delaminate the surface course. Even light rain (0.1"+ forecast) is a no-go. The base surface also needs to be dry from any prior rain.
What weather do you need for sealcoating?
Sealcoating needs air temp at least 50°F (ideally 60°F+), no rain in the 24 hours before AND 24 hours after application, and ideally humidity below 90%. High humidity dramatically extends cure time and can cause sealant failure.
Is this tool accurate for surface temperature?
This tool uses air temperature from Open-Meteo. Surface temperature depends on solar radiation, shade, and prior night temps. As a rule of thumb, a dark asphalt surface in direct sun runs 10–20°F warmer than air temp — which can be a problem in summer heat (over 130°F surface).
