How Asphalt Tonnage is Calculated

The formula is straightforward — but the details matter.

Tons = (Area in sq ft × Depth in feet × 145 lbs/cu ft) ÷ 2,000

  • 145 lbs/cu ft is the standard density for hot-mix asphalt (HMA). Dense-graded mixes typically range 140–150 lbs/cu ft.
  • Depth in feet — convert inches to feet by dividing by 12. A 2" lift = 0.167 ft.
  • 2,000 lbs per ton (short ton, used in the US and Canada).

Why add 10% overage?

Always order more than your calculated need. Asphalt compacts during rolling — typically 10–15% volume reduction. You'll also lose material at irregular edges, curves, and truck tailgate. Running short mid-job is an expensive problem: you pay a second delivery fee and risk a cold joint if the plant load takes too long.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tons of asphalt do I need per square foot?▼

At 2" depth: approximately 0.025 tons per sq ft (1 ton covers about 40 sq ft). At 3" depth: approximately 0.036 tons per sq ft (1 ton covers about 27 sq ft). Use the calculator above for exact numbers.

How many tons of asphalt fit in a standard dump truck?▼

A standard tandem dump truck holds 15–20 tons. A tri-axle or quad-axle truck holds 20–25 tons. Always confirm with your asphalt plant — load size varies by truck configuration and local weight limits.

What is asphalt density in lbs per cubic foot?▼

Standard hot-mix asphalt (HMA) is approximately 145 lbs per cubic foot. Dense-graded mixes range from 140–150 lbs/cu ft depending on aggregate type and binder content. Confirm the spec with your plant for critical jobs.

How much does a ton of asphalt cover?▼

At 1" depth: 1 ton covers approximately 80 sq ft. At 2" depth: approximately 40 sq ft per ton. At 3" depth: approximately 27 sq ft per ton. The thicker the lift, the less area per ton.

Should I add a waste factor to my tonnage calculation?▼

Yes — always add 10% for residential jobs, 5–8% for large flat commercial lots. You lose material to compaction, irregular edges, curves, and truck tailgate. Running short mid-pour is expensive and causes cold joints.
